I'm guessing this is because the power levels of both PCs and Monsters have changed since Arneson ran his original campaign. As PCs became more powerful, Demons remained at the upper scale, but other monsters like the trolls remained where they were originally.

Both Tolkien's Balrogs and D&D's Demons draw from Judeo-Christian sources (among other things), but both have changed the entities, making them their own. Balrogs and Balors are very similar, however.

OTOH, I do like the idea of the City of Father Dragon being surrounded by Balrogs... :twisted:
