For me, it has to do with the grittiness of setting & frankly the sci-fi elements of the setting. If you need sci-fi tech, blasters or robots, just plug in Space Master stuff that fits the needs. Plus I just happen to love Role Master compared to D&D, I just have a hard time seeing myself run any other game.

I haven't played RoleMaster since the early 1990. There was only one GM in our group who was able to pull off that role, but we all had fun playing. We mostly used Middle Earth as our setting because we started with MERP and then moved on to RM, but we also tried out a few other variants. I do recall playing a Jedi-like character in a SpaceMaster game.
