Duke Brundaire of Blackmoor - The Dog Duke

Lawful High Thonian Human Ftr 9, Str 16, Dex 15, Con 16, Int 12, Wis 13, Cha 14, AC 0, Hp 72

Duke Brundaire, also known as the Dog Duke, is the ruler of Blackmoor. This 37 year old man inherited the throne of Blackmoor from the Bloody Duke. Brudaire had to do alot of work to restore the trust of the people after the Bloody Duke's terrible ways had driven them away from the rulers of Blackmoor. However, his steady work for the common good of the people of Blackmoor eventually lead to him becoming a kind of folk hero.

In his youth, The Dog Duke studied at the University of Mohacs, just like King Uther would do centuries later. In his time at university, the Dog Duke befriended Marcellius who would go on to become a war hero of the Empire before moving to the North to serve as a military advisor to the Duke. Brundaire is also friends with the Elven king and both rulers have been working hard to maintain the alliance between the Elves and the Thonians, even though members of both race are becoming more and more suspicious of one another. There are some who refer to the Elven King, Marcellius and a few others as the Duke's Companions, but that is not an official term in this age. The Duke is married to Duchess Triolana and the couple have three sons and two daughters.

Duke Brundaire is aware that many things threaten his realm. Dark demons sometimes escape the woods. Barbarians frequently raid the coutryside and a sinister religious group calling themselves the Cult of Id have recently caught his attention. This is one of the reasons the Duke is trying so hard to maintain old alliances and build new friendships in order to protect his realm against threats from all sides.

In times of war or adventure, Duke Brundaire wears a Plate Mail +1 and carries a Two-Handed Sword +2 called Black Flame* (AL Lawful, Int 9, Ego 3, detect evil, detect magic, extra damage, healing). He will often ride his stallion, Tempest, and is often seen in the company of his many war dogs, which earned him the nick name the Dog Duke.

*Black Flame is Uther's sword in DA1.

The Dog Duke originally appears in the FFC.

King Uhlmar - The Elven King
Neutral Elf Lord 20, Str 16, Dex 18, Con 12, Int 16, Wis 13, Cha 17, AC 0, Hp 72

Uhlmar was the first king of the elves. He is now an ancient monarch, even by Elven standards. In his youth, Uhlmar was a curious explorer, befriending humans such as King Robert of Geneva and Halgred Forestwalker. 500 years later, Uhlmar is a wise king. He has two children. Prince Comelar and Princess Ceridrone. Comelar is a loyal son, but it is Uhlmar’s daughter who is her father’s strongest critic. She is worried that Uhlmar is too trusty of the short lived humans.

Recently, Uhlmar has made friends with the Duke of Blackmoor. Together they hope to reforge the old alliance between their races in spite of growing differences between the two peoples. Uhlmar rules a vast forest kingdom known as the Hart Forest. His realm is populated by both High Elves and Wild Elves as well as Fey races and various sylvan races like Dryads, Satyrs, Pixies and Sprites.

He wears the Crown of Elvenkind, a powerful artifact.

Dog Duke:

Sounds all good to me except for one thing. I don't see him inheriting the dukedom from the bloody duke, or being related to him in any way. Rather I like the idea that he is new blood appointed as succesor to the heirless Bloody Duke, and sent north by the emporer specifically to oppose the ID threat.

Thanks for the input! yeah this sounds good. I may have to revise my description of the Dog Duke's court mage a bit, but that is okay. It looks like we are slowly developing a more nuanced vision of the Blackmoor Id conflict. Smile

Princess Ceridrone Ithamis - “The Black Queen”
Neutral Elf 8, Str 14, Dex 17, Con 13, Int 18, Wis 10, Cha 18, AC 0, Hp 48

Princess Ceridrone is the daughter of King Uhlmar and sister to Prince Comelar. Born 240 years ago, she has lived most of her life in King Uhlmar’s Hartwood Realm. She is a powerful spellcaster and is also very well liked, especially among the woodelves. Lately she has become more and more critical of her father’s open attitude towards humans.

Unbeknownst to most, the princess has secretly been delving into the darker mysteries of magic. Her frustration about her father’s rule has lead her to make plans to remove him from power should it be necessary. The Princess is not actually evil. She is motivated by concern for the elven nation and fear of the brutality she has witnessed among humans. This has caused her to seek out the wisdom of Dealth, the Veiled Lady, a sinister Elven Patron of Magic.

In combat she prefers using spells. She wields a Staff of Wizardry and dons a leather armor +5 engraved with elven runes.

Notes: Princess Ceridrone later becomes The Black Queen of the Westryn Elves.

Thanks for the encouragement Yaz!

Inspired by your words I give you a new character. A nice reminder that not every NPC in this age needs to be high level:

Callas Anithenetos (The Keymaster)
Lawful Elf 3, Str 14, Dex 18, Con 13, Int 17, Wis 15, Cha 12, AC 1, Hp 17

The son of Clan Master Hathreios Anithenos, Callas is a young elf of 170 years. Due to his father’s influence in the court of King Uhlmar, young Callas has been allowed to travel with the entourage of Prince Comelar on several adventures. Like many elves, Callas combines physical aptitude with a knack for scholarly lore. He has not yet decided whether he wants to become a warrior or focus on the pursuits of magic.

Callas does not know much about humans, but he is both fascinated and fearful of other races. He is impatient to learn more of about the world outside his safe home in the elven woodlands. He has a Tiny Air Elemental companion named Breeze. (HD 1*, AC 5, Move, Flying: 360’ (120’), Attack 1, DMG 1d4, Int 9, Save as F1, XP: 13)
In combat, Callas dons a Chainmail and Shield and wields a Shortword +1 named Hunter.

Notes: Callas Anithenenos originally appears in in Dungeons of Castle Blackmoor (DoCBM) p 7 where he is described as an aging elf who guards the entrance to the Dungeons in the year 1030. Going with the description above would make him 670 years old in that age. Most likely he also participated in the liberation of Blackmoor after the 3rd Coot Invasion. It should be noted that DoCBM is not quite clear as to whether Callas Anithenenos and the Keymaster are two different individuals or a single character. I went by the assumption that they are the same.
