I was a huge Marvel fan as a kid. I grew up on the Hulk, Spiderman, Micronauts and Godzilla before switching over to everyone's favorite Cimmerian at 11, but I remember those days fondly. I could never really get into the DC heroes for some reason and if I'm honest I don't suppose I ever really tried that hard with such a great stable of characters available from Marvel. My only real contact with Captain America was an issue of What If? where he crossed paths with Conan through some sort of inter-dimensional portal, but I love the concept behind him and probably should check out some of those old issues sometime. The movie sounds like another great time from the current stream of Marvel hero movie reboots Big Grin

Cool,
I had the same experience with Marvel vs DC, in that the Marvel characters simply appealed more to me. As with a lot of people, the X-Men quickly became my favorites, although I enjoyed Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the Avengers as well. These were the days when Christ Claremont and John Byrne were doing X-Men and Frank Miller did things like Wolverine (and Daredevil).

More recently I really enjoyed the first couple of TPs of the Ultimates, which the Avengers movie is closely connected to. This is where they started having Nick Fury look like Samuel Jackson. In this series I like how they emphasized Captain America's 1940s sense of ethics coming into clash with the 20th Century. I also liked how the first issues stayed vague on whether Thor was a God or not with different characters having different theories about where he came from.

What Marvel misses, lamentably, is an artsy line for their characters. (At least I don't remember that they had one.)

Like, DC has remained popular even with casual fans (like me) simply because from time to time, they let Tim Sale, Frank Miller, or Mike Mignola
do crazy stuff with their characters. Marvel sort of loses out on that. Like, the last Moon Knight was capital-letter-AWFUL, and the last time I
thought Daredevil was worth a look was during the Yellow miniseries, and that one is also from a few years back.

That said, Captain America was probably the only superhero movie I truly liked, so, Disney better deliver with the sequel.

Although I was always a (British) marvel fan in my youth, you've hit upon a very good point there. In fact, my only exposure to DC has always been through things like Frank Miller's Dark Knight. Marvel should really go for that, especially as they are happy to have all these alternative universes so it doesn't matter what happens to the characters. Actually, DC could have gone further with the concept - I always wondered how Watchmen would have turned out if they'd let Alan Moore play with some real DC characters.

While I enjoyed such miniseries from DC, what I liked about Marvel (at least back in the 80s) was that they had their high quality storylines integrated into their main series, instead of as alternative reality type things.

That said, the Ultimates lines were an attempt at something similar by Marvel, as were things like the more recent Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon (awesome).

With DC, I did enjoy "the artsy lines" as well as many of the Vertigo Titles beginning with The Sandman, but generally felt the more main stream stuff was too weak.

I actually felt that Captain America was the weakest movie in the Avengers family (not counting the Hulks), but it was still enjoyable. Also, the character has a lot more potential than has been delivered for him in the two movies with him so far. I'd love for them to delve more into the Hero Out of Time concept as well as more WWII flashbacks! Smile

Really? - Interesting, but then, taste is taste. For me, CA was quite interesting, because I am attracted to historical takes on supheroes,
not so much on the upteenth modern-day rendition. Like, the route X-Men First Class went, for example.

Overall, it's not like I didn't like Marvel. Moon Knight, probably the only superhero comic book I still read with a certain regularity.
But overall, I guess I simply like DC more: More basic morale discussion, more depth to most of their characters, and, finally,
a model more rooted in the pulp series of the 30s and 40s, which, until today, are a guilty pleasure to me. Smile

Captain America was a nice movie, but I agree with the norwegian that it was my unfavoritest of the bunch (that I have seen, but I refuse to watch Ed Norton's Hulk). Iron Man has Robert Downey so both of them are quite unbeatable + Black Widow* (and the 1st is still in my never humble opinion the greatest superhero film of all time - beats even Dark Knight) and I have a huge soft spot for Thor (KIRBY HATS!). My problem is most with Cap as a character, I just don't really like him outside of the leadertype in ensemble casts (which is why he worked so well in Avengers) unless they go the douche Cap route and have him kick people in the face when they are down.

That said - Winter Soldier is an amazing storyline (and the best comicbook Marvel is putting out nowdays, easily), so this one should be great. I have faith Smile
