Alright if you would please point me to the Arneson side of the story so I may have a take from that viewpoint. Thanks in advance.

Please open a new thread for that. Also, I will help you out, no problem, but you need to be a bit more specific.

Oh, and while I am on it, rather than to hear it from me, if you're really into the topic, get this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Playing-at-World- ... 0615642047 Explains things in a fairl good way, and most importantly, has footnotes.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be ordering that book this morning. I have to confess to a certain amount of "rubbernecking" in my interest in the story. I know what happened but just can't quite get my mind around the betrayal that occurred, whether it was done out of greed or just plain egomania

I am reluctant to answer to that, not because I would try to be diplomatic, but because, at the end of the day, I would not like to put words in people's mouths.
I know that Mr Arneson was a scandalously underrated writer (as were Jeff Perren, RJK, and Don Kaye, btw), but I wouldn't be able to comment in detail how much that really takes away from Mr Gygax, if at all. I like to think though, that it was more a clash of personalities than really an intentional theft of intellectual property. Now, what I myself have observed is that the tone used by Mr Gygax and his associates was simply inadequate, no matter what their objective point in this was. I am inclined to believe the people that don't use hate speech of whatever kind to get their arguments across, if you know what I mean.

For what's its worth I'd say Gary was a middling writer. There are plenty of other books I'd rather read than his fiction.

Always nice to hear it. I used to be reasonable until I joined DF. If you look at my progression of posting there you'll note that I started out with a fairly open mind. It became more intractable and irritable as time went on in particular to 2nd edition. Now I'm letting it go and trying to get back to who I used to be more "you don't like what I do? Meh, your loss" less "Rhhhhhrrrraaharrhaaa FIGHT!"

While this is all good and friendly so far, lets avoid discussing other forums on the Comeback Inn. /Moderator Hat off.

Yeah, be friendly, folks. When I have the big "Rafe turns 30" party later this year, I'd rather not choke people out over edition wars.
Like I had to do last year. *Sigh.* But, hey, on the upside, you're hereby invited to Germany in November. |
