Access to original MMRPG episodes
#1
Hi board,

Any chance of getting access to the original episodes for 3.5? I would love to take a look through them (even for adventure ideas if nothing else) but obviously the zeitgeist website is down

Hey Shane, welcome!

For all I know, they are copyright to Code Monkey Publishing right now.

Might be an itchy issue...

Ah.. bugger.. does CMP still exist as an entity that we as a community can speak to about them?

Theoretically, yes.

Really, no.

Now, I am not endorsing any form of illegal activity,
and myself refrain from any filesharing or illegal downloading of data (yepp, I am a book and DVD buyer),
but given that the modules were freebies anyway,
and that the company that holds the rights to them has lost the right to the brand name
and will likely never be able to use any of the material as it is,
you might not run any risk of of legal reprimand if you look for them from other sources.

NO, we people here do not encourage copyright violations of any kind.

YES, the copyright status of the modules is not entirely clear; I myself wrote one,
so it's not like I am talking out of my butt.

So, as long as we get no definite answer from one of the related companies - ZGG, CMP, or WotC -
that clears to episodes' legal status in a satisfactory way, we have to assume the episodes fall into that
strange grey area that is called "under terms of fair use".

That's just my opinion, though. I AM NOT A LAWYER.

Shane,
welcome to the Comeback Inn. I am looking into ways we can get these available again. If I am successful in doing so, are there any particular episodes you would like to see available sooner rather than later?

The copyright just insures that the text contained within the documents is owned by Zeitgeist/WotC, so if you were to quote it somewhere, you would have to give credit and/or ask for permission.

The files themselves were always intended for free distribution to fans, so you can still find many of the episodes out there on the internet if you search by episode number and name.

No one will get into trouble by downloading or copying the files. That would be like telling a publisher they can't give away free copies of their books because they are copyrighted - the copyright (for published works) is intended to protect the owner of the contents, not the actual media it appears on or in.

I think you are right Sheridan. I have put this off for too long. Let me see what I can do over the next few days Smile

While I must be clear to exclude the use of the Trademark Blackmoor and other terms owned by Wizards of The Coast, as the owner of the copyright of the MMRPG episodes (excluding those 4.0 episodes owned by CMP), I can give you freedom to use the contents of the MMRPG episodes for non-commercial use. Please cite when you reference them and definitely don't use them in commerce, but they were, and are still intended for the use of the fans.

Best!
