Dungeon Crawl Classic RPG Blackmoor?

Patronage sounds like an interesting concept, but alien to my experience with Old School gaming (except in Traveller, where patrons are commonplace).

I guess Traveller patrons are very different from the DCC RPG ones. In many old school games not much thought is put into where the character got his magic from. This idea reminds me of Elric's relationship with Arioch though, so I wouldnt be surprised if old school games may have brought in some such ideas even if they were not as solidly defined.

DCC RPG sounds like a combination of old school and ideas Joseph Goodman just thought were cool, which really isnt a bad design philosophy. Reminds me a bit of Lamentations of the Flame Princess in that respect 8)

This is a *great* idea, and fits really well with the thralls. Magic in the DCC RPG eventually corrupts most casters, and patron magic (casting spells specific to your patron) corrupts you in key, patron-specific ways. It is a perfect explanation for thralls.

The idea behind patrons is that wizards and elves deal with strange, otherworldly entities in order to glean the secrets required to cast spells. So while not every caster has a patron, the "quickest" route to acquiring spells is submitting yourself to the will of dark powers. Dealing with demons, devils, and things from the outer dark is common for DCC RPG arcane casters. Magic is dark, grim stuff.

Very interesting! Would very much work be required to convert stuff from the d20 Blackmoor line to DCCRPG? Smile

Pretty simple, IMO. If B/X had ascending AC and the basic d20 dicing conventions, it would look a lot like the DCC RPG.

If you want, check out the free beta and see where it falls ... and if nothing else, it is worth it for the new Otus, Easley, DSL, and Roslof art. Smile

That's actually a really good point.

It's funny – so much of my focus is on the adventures, which actually *do* read a lot like the B/X adventures, that the player side slips out of focus.

DCC RPG Art Galleries have now been made available:
http://www.goodman-games.com/5070preview.html

Some real good stuff there, by names which should be very familiar to old schoolers 8)

I can't believe that I missed this thread!

I've been playtesting DCC since March or so and it's a great game system. I think it would be a great fit for Blackmoor and hope someone gets around to it before I do. Tongue
