IIRC, hobbits (as a D&D race) got nerfed by the Tolkein estate.

Again, this would seem to be something that was great design for Dragonlance, but was then ripped out of its original context and retconned into mainstream D&D halflings.
I think that does both Dragonlance's kender and D&D's halflings a disservice.
