Wikipedia (not always the best source) seems to indicate that HEAVY METAL magazine had a debut in 1977, so if there are Horseclan books serialized there they probably aren't the first ones.

That still puts the date of Horseclans after the events listed in FFC.

Good to have that clarified then. Now I have no reason to try to hunt down more information on these magazines.
