A fragment of a scene, that stuck in my head and decided you all might like to peek at....

Late summer, UC 1019

“Impossible,” one of Father’s underbarons said, crossing his arms. “You must be mistaken.”

The Regency Council chamber grew silent. The other barons squirmed in their seats, looking decidedly uncomfortable.

Nobody even dared draw breath, for fear it would light the fuse of the wizard’s temper.

Robert the Bald did not scowl. He did not blink. His jaw clenched, and the sound of grinding teeth filled the silence.

“Look,” Leah whispered in my ear, pointing down at the top of the wizard’s bald pate. “I wonder which vein will burst first?”

Father cleared his throat, and the wizard shifted his murderous glare from the underbaron to his liege.

“It was big, Uther.” Robert the Bald was never a man for frivolous titles. “Damn near filled the entire lens of my biggest scope. That quake you felt wasn’t just Kadis’ indigestion.”

Baron Svenson and Master Willem both snorted a laugh before hiding their smirks in long drinks from their goblets.

Uberstar was on his feet, the beads in his beard clacking. “You dare to sully the name of the Father of Mountains?”

“Impossible,” the underbaron sniffed, again, no doubt emboldened by the diversion of the wizard’s glare. “Cities do not simply… fall right out of the sky.”

“Then maybe you would care to explain what it is that lit the morning ahead of the dawn and left that rather large, smoking hole in the wall of the Valley of the Ancients?” Robert the Bald asked. I shuddered a bit, at the man’s conversational tone. Leah giggled. Too loud, for it drew glares of Father and the wizard, as well as half the lords of the Regency Council to the railing around the chamber’s upper gallery.

Father lifted a finger, and pointed to the door.

“Out.”

Leah sighed, and pouted a bit, but we’d promised Mother. We obeyed.
