Archeological evidence of the Mages' Wars

Were the various factions there from the beginning, or they are the result of progressive consolidation?
If there was a progressive consolidation and originally it was one wizard - one tower, we should be able to find some leftovers of that (ruins, foundations, dungeons, etc.) a bit all over the place...

My impression is that it started out with many different factions which were gradually consolidated or destroyed.

So yep, there could be towers "all over the place", although possibly some parts of the map have been wilderness throughout Blakmoor's history. OTOH, canonical facts are so sparse on that issue that leaving it up to the needs of the individual DM probably makes the most sense.

It is also possible that the Ordo Elementarum, now gradually returning from their exile on the Planes, may be investigating many of these old ruins now, since those would be locations they would be more familiar with.
