[Blog] The "Blackmoor is Just a Chainmail Variant" Fallacy

Havard Wrote:I think there is a list of books and films Dave read collected somewhere here on the forums. Tolkien, deCamp's Conan, John Norman, Poul Anderson, Lord Dunsany, Star Trek, classic horror shows etc would be on the list.
Yeah, there is. And some things can be inferred by Dave's use of creatures and technology in his campaign. (Tarns, for example, are pure Norman. Tricorders are Star Trek.)

My point was simply that Gary went out of his way to make lists and publish them. Dave was more cryptic.

Havard, a hearty yes sir from me. I'm sure you will recall, but just as a point for folks to reference if they like, that I expressed a similar opinion in this blog post http://boggswood.blogspot.com/2013/02/o ... story.html

but I put the emphasis there on what I call "the Braunstein element." Anyway, your central point, that the rules of CM, to whatever extent they may have found use in BM, explain none of the specialness that is Dave Arneson's Blackmoor, is well taken indeed.
