Hi Friends!
I wanted to share my experience with Dave and House Rules. Indeed I did experience the “explain why you would survive/save” rule. As I recall, Dave reserved that rule for conventions and one off games. In our regular gaming session, players were able to make a Saving Throw (as we know it) and be completely free from ill effect. This meant no half damage from fireballs. As Dave said “It’s called a SAVING throw for a reason!”.
It was often common for another person to be on hand who might not be playing. Sometimes, this was Dave’s granddaughter. The House rule was “Whoever wasn’t a PC (or DM) could play the monsters.” This was often pretty fun as some folks took great pleasure in dispatching PCs by the score. Fun times!
If I remember any more, I’ll drop them in.
Cheers,
Dustin
