Despite the cold, we played until 10:30PM.
We got a large sausage pizza. Next session, I'm thinking Mexican food. I found a place nearby that makes tamales.
Games are on Tuesdays sometime after 5PM at World's Best Comics, 9714 Warwick Blvd Newport News, Virginia 23601.
++++ START OF SESSION ++++
We left last game with a new incarnation of Boo Gah, annoyingly sent by the Gawds to encourage the party on their trek into town. Or to criticize them for their delay.
After their experience with the Dopplemeister, once again the party's sole priest Elefus was depleted of healing, and raise dead spells. He was able to bring back Slim and Bane (with new flaws) so they decided to camp out for the night on the edge of the gorge. Because unlike the Horn Blows at Midnight with Jack Benny, the world doesn't end, but his spells get reinstated.
It would have been a great time to provide an early evening deadly encounter but the die rolls were in the party's favor.
Their first encounter on the path was a Grizzly Bear outside its foul smelling cave just off the path. They found it just standing there with a fish in its mouth so the party ignored it. Well and good, because this was one of those encounters the party gets the points for leaving it alone.
Not so with the next item. A landborne fish called a Hedgrow Lunger which was promptly slayed by Huang & Elefus, the killing blow landed by Huang.
Next, the path led them past an open field with a dozen and a half cute little bunnies with antlers. Jackalopes actually. They immediately formed a wedge formation and set out for the party with an eye towards Numrendir..
If you recall a few episodes back Numrendir cast one of his frequent Monster Summoning version I spells and randomly got some Jackalopes to check out the room with the jewel. Summoned Monsters have to come from somewhere, and well this was their family. This would not have been a problem had there been no survivors. But the spell expired, and the surviving Jackalopes who were formerly under the control of Numrendir, remembered what Numrendir looked like. They of course told the rest of the tribe.
Now the Jackalope tribe has a vendetta against Numrendir.
While the wedge formation was galloping toward them, Elefus cast a Blade Barrier spell in a circle around the Jackalopes. Undeterred, they Jackalopes forced their way through, losing a little less than half their number, enraging them even more. Numrendir used his wand of illusion, created the image of a Grizzly Bear headed for the Jackalopes. All but one of the Jackalopes believed the illusion and ran off, ostensibly to breed like rabbits and rebuild their numbers.
The remaining Jackalope went towards Numrendir's throat, before being killed by a blow from Elefus, it was able to scream "For my brother and sister!" at Numendir.
Boo Gah concurred.
(Look for further appearances of the Jackalope tribe in the future.)
Moving on, the party passed by what appeared to be a new fissure in the ground, probably caused by one of the recent earthquakes. There were also claw marks on the edge apparently caused by a creature that clambered out.
The party spurred on by an insult from Boo Gah, fortunately didn't waste any further time and moved on.
Next the party ran into a dozen of Deadly Praying Mantises (or is it Manti?) finishing the remains of a dead horse,
Half of them rushed the party where they engaged in man to bug combat. Three rounds later the rest of the Mantises attacked. While the battle was a foregone conclusion and the party won, since the Mantises didn't feel any pain it took longer that they would have liked.
Otherwise during the battle, Slim was hit by a bout of Agoraphobia and headed into the woods. The last thing the party noticed was the sound of "Snickety Snack" then Slim screaming and falling headfirst out of the woods scratching the ground. Lastly they saw him being dragged back into the woods with one final scream, with another "Snickety Snack".
Boo Gah was encouraged by this, saying there is now one less piece of baggage to slow us down.
