[WL] Sar-Aigu and Viridians (and the Temple of the Frog!)
#1
First introduced in the Last Fantasy Campaign, the idea that the Viridians are related to the Sar-Aigu, is a theory with interesting consequences for those wishing to use Blackmoor and the Wilderlands of High Fantasy together.

Now the LFC has The North be an early colony of the Viridians. The way I see it, the Viridians as we know them today are descendants of the Sar-Aigu. Its just a matter of perspective I guess. Potatoe-Potaahtoe.

The Sar-Aigu were introduced in Dungeons of Castle Blackmoor. They were a Sahuagin-like race associated with the Deity later worshipped in the Temple of the Frog, which is located on the island where the Sar-Aigu first appeared. The Sar-Aigu then went on to perform their evil ritualnear the modern location of Castle Blackmoor before being driven into the sea by an unknown force.

The Viridians, the race of green skinned semi-aquatic humanoids of the Wilderlands setting were created 4433 years ago by the deity known as Armadad Bog before eventually building the Empire of Viridistan. The Wilderlands has several deities with some similar traits:
  • Armadad Bog
  • The Toad, God of the Mermist Swamp
  • Tsathoggus

Now the theory in this post is that all of these deities are the one and the same as The Frog God of Blackmoor.

My theory is that after the Sar-Aigu had been driven into the Black Sea, Armadad Bog lead some of them through the Firefrost Channel and onto the West Coast where they eventually reached what would become the Empire of Viridistan. The Sar-Aigu who arose in Viridistan had been changed and now appeared as True Viridians.

Other Sar-Aigu remained behind in the north, but what happened to them is story for a different thread.

Some interesting implications of this:
  • PCs from Blackmoor can travel to the Wilderlands and discover an entire Empire devoted to their enemy, The Frog
  • Viridistan can send expeditions to aid and protect the Temple of the Frog.
  • PCs from the Wilderlands can be sent on a quest to Blackmoor to destroy an ancient Viridian Temple.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the shoutout, but... That link doesn't go to the LFC.

As to the concept, obviously in my opinion, the WL-centric approach is better, simply because the Viridians are protrayed as godking-like race, while the froglings, well, are frogs with spears.

But for a BM-centric approach, why not?

Yikes,
link has been fixed now. My point was not to say that Viridians were descended from Frogfolk, but rather than Frogfolk and Viridians have the same ancestors (The Sar-Aigu), but yeah at this point that is just nitpicking.

I am more interested in seeing Viridian Crusaders in NC1030 looking for The Temple of the Frog in seach of ancient artifacts of their ancestry. Might easily stir up some trouble in a standard Blackmoor campaign Smile

I wrote a piece like that a few years ago, called "The Viridian Dagger", for some contest at the Necromancer Games forum.
No idea if I still have it, though. The idea itself works, though a tie to WL is likely going to bring in concepts that supersede BM lore; the Viridians are the "World Emperors", after all.

Back when I was running The War of the Thieves, I pondered introducing the elusive Prince Justini, a WL NPC, to the campaign, as a husband prospect for Tolleen, if Mant wouldn't make it.
I decided against it after reviewing the material, because it would have driven the PBP into a completely different direction.

Overall, joining the two settings together can be rewarding, but I think one would need a long introductory period in a game to bring in all the changes.
I might pick up the idea in Reprise, though - if, as the LFC assumes, the present of our BM and the present of WL are the same, then,
the future of the settings might be interesting in that respect: If the line of the World Emperors dies, then that will shake up the Viridian ecology all over the planet.

I am searching for a name for whatever Saint Stephen is. He is a green skinned humanoid alien but I don't think the alien species is ever named anywhere. Viridian seemed possibly a good option. So what are these WL Viridians again? Is that from a published source?
