Mordred RPG - Havard - 07-10-2012

I've been hearing great things about this upcoming RPG. Perhaps you could tell us a little more about this Le Noir Faineant? Smile

Does anyone else know anything about this?

Re: Modred RPG - Rafael - 07-10-2012

Well, thank you for asking, my dear viking!

The document I am working on under the code name "Mordred RPG" is a hommage Blackmoor, and overall,
Arnesonian fantasy. - Like somebody who has played it, investigated it, and written for it for seven years would do.

Right now, the last draft doesn't include any stats, though, so it will be a setting book only,
much like the Kingdoms of Kalamar core book for 3e.

The setting... A secret. But let's put it this way, everybody who likes Blackmoor, and who likes what we do here is gonna like it.

Probably.

In any case, from now on, I will periodically release previews for this over the next few months.

There is still A LOT open in the air, but what I can promise is, unless I get sick, or die, or whatever,
I'll release this over the next twelve months.

But Rafe, Rafe, where will you publish it?

Not sure, to tell the truth. So far, I have only realized two things:

1) RPG publishing is a total non-profit business.
2) I want to keep the rights to this; creating a world that is free from copyright crap is the whole idea of the exercise.

So, whichever company out there can meet MY requirements, them I will grant publishing rights.

Also, and most importantly, I am looking for a way to make it legal for people to write for the setting
- and cash in their own money independent from me - while I retain my rights as an author.

Not sure if that is SO clear to you: This would effectively mean that I donated an entire setting to the gaming community;
if that is, at all, legally possible without some asshole shark taking over my creation, I will do so without hesitating.

Lots of stuff to do, lots of stuff to come.

In case you have any questions, ASK away, folks!

Mordred RPG just got real.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

"Mordred", not "Modred", my dear viking! Quick, fix it!

Re: Mordred RPG - Havard - 07-11-2012

Fixed!

Would this be sort of similar to Dragons at Dawn/Champions of ZED, or more in the spirit of Blackmoor perhaps?

No chance of seeing even bare bones stuff like level/alignment? Will there be a separate book with the rules later on?

That is awesome news! Smile

IANAL, but from what I understand you hold the copyright to anything you post on the net. However it is pretty difficult to prevent people from stealing ideas etc. OTOH, that would also be true for published material. You can do it if you are WotC, Paizo or Games Workshop, but otherwise it can be pretty difficult.

In any case, this is really exciting news! I think this is going to be great! Smile

Hehe, thanks, man!

Quote:Would this be sort of similar to Dragons at Dawn/Champions of ZED, or more in the spirit of Blackmoor perhaps?

That's the thing: Not at all.

This is a SETTING, not a system.

I tell stories that I think would fit in my own vision of Blackmoor - which, after about ten years of DMing related campaigns,
of which my many online outings are likely the most prominent and lasting experiences, is pretty removed from published canon.

In addition, the initial concept for the setting was that it takes place some time in our campaign's future,
and on a totally different spot on the planet.

Strictly speaking, the similarities will be minimal, but for those among you who know me, and who have played in my games,
it should be pretty obvious.

Note also that I am not promoting this as a clone game; however, I am an Arnesonian gamer at my core, and so, no reason to hide it. Smile

FYI, there will be a city named Sumerset (!), a haunted mansion called "Gloomy House", and pretty famous society named
"The Kitchen Knights". But with that, most OBVIOUS similarities to any previously published material end. Smile

Quote:No chance of seeing even bare bones stuff like level/alignment? Will there be a separate book with the rules later on?

Right now, no. I don't want to make promises that I won't be able to keep.

Essentially, I favor the idea of rules-free setting books, like the Kingdoms of Kalamar stuff, or the Ravenloft Gazetteers.

I will write a basic introduction to make the setting applicable for fantasy gamers, though, but more in the vein of Judges Guild's
universal system. No idea yet about the details yet, though.

IANAL2, but the thing is, it's less about me fearing that ideas would be stolen (which would be a wee bit paranoid),
and more about ideas not being forgotten all too easily. Even if, in a few years, I abandon gaming, I want to look back,
read a book, and cheerish the memories.

And, most importantly, I don't want anybody to be able to lawyer me out of a story that I want to tell.
Like, right now, stuff like TSR's behavior by the end of the 90s might seem absurd, but, in any case, better be safe than sorry.

So, I sat down and began working on my own setting.
The result, I will publish soon, and the IP, I want to keep open for the fans, so that gaming and creativity, and even small
business endeavors are never inhibited by nonsensical copyright locks.

How this is going to work out, we will see, but so far, I am not afraid of comparing Mordred to other stuff I have seen on the market.

So, let's wait a while longer, and then... Enjoy. Smile

Re: Mordred RPG - Rafael - 08-01-2012

Some things have been set in motion.

Nothing is all that set in stone yet, but from now on, people should be able to receive new info via this facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/MordredbyRaphaelPinthus

Realistically speaking, and mainly because I decided to hire some professional editor and mapper guys, and have no idea how long that will take,
this book will likely not come out before the second half of 2013.

...But that doesn't mean I won't be generous about, well, whatever I can give you folks! Smile

BTW, yeah, I am using a pen name for this. Everybody here should know my real name, but for this, and all of my other literary endeavors, I shall henceforth be known as "Raphael Pinthus".
Not that my real name wouldn't sound sort of made-up for a German guy, but as much as I welcome every attention in my shiny upcoming product, I iwould rather keep my hobbies
from coworkers, bosses, and,, raaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, students.

Wonder how you manage that, my dear viking?

Re: Mordred RPG - Rafael - 08-01-2012

Oh, I am building the page right now, so just *LAIK* it, if you like, even though it might look a bit messy RIGHT NOW. Smile

Re: Mordred RPG - Rafael - 08-17-2012

So, the introductory adventure contained in the book will go about the infamous Prince Who Never Was, one of my personal favorite villainous creations.

Just revealed that over at DF.

That's a direct reference to MY Blackmoor.

And, OMG, that should get you guys so awesomely fired up. Who could it be... That "Prince Who Never Was"?

Re: Mordred RPG - Rafael - 08-27-2012

This is currently the top candidate for the final cover.

If you can name the artist, whoever you may be, I'll send you a free copy of the final, printed book.

Yeah, another small contest. Smile
