These days, there is so much anger on the Internet it is depressing. Anger generates more clicks and range bait articles pays for advertising. People are divided into pointless camps so they can fight over pointless things.

Well, not here on the Blackmoor Blog! And definitely not during Blackmoor Week which is all about love for our hobby in all its forms and editions. Although I am a fan of the TSR editions of D&D, I am always happy to meet other D&D players even if they prefer other editions than I do. The more gamers in the world, the better! I believe this is true to the spirit of Dave Arneson who was all about enjoying every kind of game he could find. Last year I wrote about how I believe Dave Arneson would be happy as long as people find their own way to enjoy D&D. And I am sure he would like to see people run Blackmoor for any edition.

Dave Arneson's company, Zeitgeist Games, helped bring Blackmoor to the 3rd and 4th Edition of D&D. Over at the Comeback Inn we have a section dedicated to Blackmooor 5E conversions where you can find the Shattered Empires Campaign from Phil Slama as well as conversion notes from game designer Chris Dolunt and others. Over at The Piazza, my friend Coronides has started a new 5E Blackmoor conversion project and he has told me that he really needs help from real Blackmor fans! If you can lend him a hand, please head over there and help him out even if you know nothing about 5E.

For fans of AD&D and Classic D&D, do not despair! We have lots of stuff going on for you too at The Comeback Inn. For most of my own projects, I try to keep things as rules light as possible so that it is easy to use with most editions. I will be sharing more of that over the next couple of days.
Hope you are enjoying Blackmoor Week 2022

I have my own edition preference, but I'm not opposed to playing several different versions of D&D. However, for Blackmoor to survive, it will need to be adapted for 5E/One D&D and for any future updates to the game, so I'm glad to see efforts to make that happen. When there is a conversion already available for players and DMs, it makes learning and using a setting so much easier, whereas the lack of a conversion usually means the setting will gradually fade in gamer awareness and popularity. As the gaming audience ages and the game itself evolves, keeping Blackmoor current, through some form of adaptation or conversion, will be essential to its long-term preservation.

In honor of Dave Arneson, I want to thank Håvard, the original Blackmoor group members, and everyone who has done their part to promote Blackmoor and encourage the sharing of setting content, history, adventures, conversions, and more.

Same here. My favorite edition is BECMI, but I will play any edition, especially with cool people around the table. I've been running 5E a lot recently because most of my players like this edition. However, I also tend to tweak any edition so that it feels a bit more old school than as written.

I also think fans of later editions will be more willing to try older editions if we start by playing their edition of choice.

The most important thing is to have fun! Smile

One great thing about 5E is the optional rules that allow you to run the game in a very old-school style. Sadly, many gamers don't know about these rules or have never tried them, and many don't understand or use the default rules properly. So they have drawn many erroneous conclusions about the game. I'm glad that you're willing to run 5E for your players and that you've tweaked the game to your liking. That's the Dave Arneson way.

I'm planning on acquiring the PDFs from DriveThruRPG at some point next year, right now I am trying to save as much money as possible for moving expenses. The goal, once I have the PDFs, is to convert as much of it as I can to Pathfinder 1E. I'll probably release a PDF document onto the web for anyone else that wants to use Blackmoor with PF1E w/o having to do the conversions themselves...but as per any creatures in the D20 books, unfortunately that's not my forté, so I may hire [for pay] someone to do that work for me.
