Here's a question to you guys: Although this game is intended as a tribute to Gary and should be as much by the book as possible.... what do you think about including house rules? Fact is that I usually never play AD&D btb, and although I wish to do it here, there are some things that I either don't feel very comfortable with or flatly don't like.

I'd like to have a general consensus about this before I adding anything homebrewed. If it is okay with you, I will post those house rules that I'd like to include here in this thread.

Thanks,

Clarence

I have never played AD&D before, so I would not recognize a house rule or not, so I have no problem with your using a house rules.

As Steve said. However, I have one question before I post:
The Heat Metal spell, what's its power, again? - I can't find the description anywhere... :?

I have no issue with house rules. I use them in my own weekly 1st edition game.

Since no one objected against a few house rules, I'd like to add a rule for critical hits and fumbles.

Each rolled 1 or 20 has a chance of being a fumble or critical hit . This is calculated as by the rules in the Dragon article Critical hits and bad misses, for those of you know it (I don't have the issue number at hand right now). I don't want to repeat the whole procedure here, but in general the chance that you score a critical is based upon your level and the AC of your opponent. The higher your level is and the lower the AC of the opponent, the greater the chance that it will be a critical hit. Your level and the opponent's AC are also the deciding factors when determining whether a rolled 1 is a fumble. The higher your level, the lower the chance that you fumble. Let me tell you that, at 16th level, the chance is generally very small.

More house rules upcoming as we move along.

Arrows and crossbow bolts

These are not automatically destroyed when shot.
Any hit means that they can usually be retrieved, unless the target itself damages them (like shooting at a black pudding for example). Those that miss and strike a solid surface have to save vs crushing blow to remain intact.

Free attacks: I have the rule that one free attack is possible whenever:

• An opponent wants to flee from combat without taking care to defend himself.
• An opponent wants to move past you without being engaged with you directly (and is in reach of your weapon).
• An opponent is helpless or otherwise unable to defend.
• An opponent wants to cast a spell and is within striking range.
