Greg, see my last post about fireballs. They have a 20 feet radius, which means that casting them in a melee situation needs exact placement to make sure that only the monsters are hit, but not the fellow adventurers. This is of course very dangerous because combatants always move back and forth during the course of a single melee round. If you still want Gaderon to cast the fireball, my house rule in such a situation is that Ivid needs to make a ST as well, indicating if he is in the blast radius of the fireball at the moment it goes off. If he makes his ST, he's unharmed. If he doesn't, another ST must follow to determine if he takes full or half damage.
