The Seal of Shadow
This ancient and fragile-looking seal of unknown manufacture bears alien inscriptions of a type that are clearly not khemitian in origin. The ebony wood that it is cut from is crumbling along the edges due to age, but the bone inlay looks newly made and shimmers with a weak and eerie glow.
The bearer of the seal can use its powers in two ways:
1. He can open up a gate to the demi-plane of shadows, and may then summon a denizen of that plane through the gate. The creature so called forth is of neutral disposition towards its summoner, so protection circles or devices are advisable when dealing with it.
2. The bearer can choose to become a Shade, a creature made of shadowstuff for a short amount of time (2 hours), once per day. As a shade, his or her powers are greatly enhanced under gloomy or shadowy conditions, such as in dungeons. Certain powerful abilities are gained this way too.
Those of you who have access to the AD&D Monster Manual II may look up the entry for this particular type of creature. Otherwise I'll provide the needed information if the seal should be used that way during the game.
