The last of Mr Welch's videos detailing the DA series. Sadly, no specific credits on which designers designed which monsters which I don't believe the Creature Crucible go into either.
Worth a watch. Gives a nice overview of the module itself. He also briefly mentions some of the stories about Dave Arneson's involvement with TSR and the DA modules. There is some mention about the module's connection to Mystara.

I disagree where he says the rights to Blackmoor have been muddled over the years. As I see it, it is pretty simple. Blackmoor is owned by WotC. If they want Blackmoor to return, they can. However, they do not own the rights to the FFC and the ZGG books so they would likely not be allowed to reprint those. That's not really something that would get in their way of making a 5E Blackmoor Hardback should WotC desire to do so however.

This is part of a series Mr Welch / Glen Welch has been making called Welcome to Mystara where he looks at all the Mystara products. This is the first video to tackle a Blackmoor related item however AFAIK.
Trolls are a unique race in Mystara. While some believe they are related to the Beastman descended races, the Northern Reaches Gazetteer suggests that this is a much older race. They may likely be related to Giants (see below). The main stronghold of the Known World Trolls is Trollhattan in the Brokenlands. It was founded by Vestland Trolls (mainly Root Trolls) in 1299 BC. The current ruler of Trollhattan is Mistress Haa'k Hordar. The following Troll races are found in Mystara:

Cross-posted from The Piazza

I was reading through AC10: The Bestiary of Giants and Dragons the other day and started thinking about the special skills possessed by giants. How can these skills become a greater part of a campaign or the setting in general?

First take a look at the Giants that were included in AC10:
Common Giants

Hill Giant - Racial Skill: Tanning hides/treating furs |

Fire Giant (Gundirrim)- Racial Skill:No Skill Given. Forging | Hell Hounds

Cloud Giant (Bromdignag)- Racial Skill: Merchants | Cloud Castles.

Frost Giant - Racial Skill: No skill given. Sailing? Ship building? | Polar Bears, Wolves, Ice Wolves

Sea Giant - Racial Skill: Alchemy /Healing | Mashers, Whales

Stone Giant - Racial Skill: Stone architecture. Castle Builders. |Cave Bear

Hunakoi: Red Skinned Stone Giants of the Isle of Dawn (M5, p10).

Mountain Giant - Racial Skill: Hunting, Animal Training | Roc Pets, Allies to dwarves

Storm Giant - Racial Skill: Sages, librarians |May have Cyclops servants

Half-Cloud Giant: This is the most common variety of Storm Giants. From their mixed parentage they have learned to fashion cloud and undersea castles.

Pure-blooded: Exceptionally strong.

In addition, Mystara has more giants than those mentioned in AC10. Should these have special skills as well?

Other Giants / Giantkin

Ogre | RC |Typically listed among Humanoids in Mystara sources, but should they have their own skills anyway?

Athach | RC | These three armed monsters from the Master Set. Would they be able able to use their arms for something creative?

Cyclops | RC | - Racial Skill: Sometimes raise sheep and harvest grapes. Have the ability to use curses. Wine makers. Some serve Storm Giants.

Fachan | (SCA) | Only one eye, one arm and one leg.

Ubue (B3) - Three headed, hermafrodites. Man-sized, but possibly related to Giants and Fairies?

Hephaeston | (AC9) | - Racial Skill: These are clearly great at forging weapons. How to distinguish them from Fire Giants?

Stalwart |(AC9) | Are these even giants? The frequent comparison to Goliaths from later editions makes me include them. Do they have any specific skills? Extremely competition oriented.

Garl |(AC9) | These are only described as stupid. They are known to ride Wooly Mamoths. Herders?

Great Giant |(Gaz7) | These were mentioned in the Northern Reaches Gazetteer. See Titans entry for some ideas. Related to Eldritch Giants of later editions?

Titans |WotI| What relationship is there between Mystara's Titans and Giants? One idea I have is that Titans were not originally servitors of the Immortals, but rather their own, powerful Immortal race. However, after opposing the Immortals, they were defeated and swore allegiance to the Immortals. Those who refused became the lesser, mortal giants. Even so, should they be known for some unique skills?

Nightwalkers |RC | Entropic/Nightmarish version of Giants.

The Famished Giant (unique) (PC1 p 27) - This giant is one of a kind, living on the Plane of Feywood. He i 50' tall. Related to the Great Giants mentioned above

Did I forget any giants? As usual, I am sticking to BECMI and AD&D Mystara sources.

Immortals - The Giant Pantheon
(From the Codex Immortalis)

Zalaj - Cloud and mountain giants, knowledge, magic, strength

Gorrziok- Sea and storm giants, oceans, extreme natural phenomena, creation and destruction

Hymir - Sea giants, water and liquids, alchemy, knowledge, revelry

Surt (Zugzul) - Fire giants, power, conquest, necromancy, war

Hel - Frost giants, death, darkness and cold energy, reincarnation, corruption

Wayland - Metallurgy, crafts, smiths and armourers, engineering and constructors, magical constructs

The topic of Guidarezzo came up again in a Piazza discussion about Mystaran saints where Mike mentioned that this immortal is referred to as Saint Guidarezzo by his followers.

Guidarezzo is first mentioned in the Immortal Set (Gold Box) p 49 and he also appears in IM1 p 13. He is mainly known for changing the sound based creatures known as "tonals" into lawful creatures and rejecting the "atonals".

In the Codex Immortalis, Marco expanded upon the character's background, making him a mortal of the Blackmoor Era:

Pandius.com Wrote:History: LIKELY THEORY: Guidarezzo was a monk and a particularly gifted composer who lived in Blackmoor during Uther the Black's reign. He was the first to codify music according to modern canon (using the pentagram and the music keys) and he composed great operas like the Universal Canticle and the Requiem Mass. Thalia, patroness of Arts and Harmony, made him his protégé and led him onto the path of immortality. After defeating many other bards and composers in musical matches, after founding the first Conservatory (a school for music arts where he trained his successors and left a whole library of musical documents) and after creating the Symphonic Organ of Celestial Harmony (or Harmonium), a huge magical instrument whose mundane copies became the organs in Blackmoor's and Thonia's richest cathedrals, he finally became immortal in BC 3930 and was worshipped as Saint Guidarezzo.

His main goal became then bringing order inside the Chaotic sphere of Energy (he was responsible for the creation of the Faenare race and collaborated with Thalia in creating the Tonals), and after Thalia's mysterious disappearance, he became the universal patron of arts and especially of music and harmony. His cult later spread to the northmen (under the identity of Brage) and the Savage Coast, where he is known as Guy d'Aret in Renardie and Bellayne. In the Known World the only cult worshipping him is based in Darokin: the Church of Universal Harmony, where he is revered together with Koryis and Asterius.

Ascension in BC3930 means he ascended to Immortality in the Thonian Year 1070.

The World of Blackmoor contains the following Bardic Organizations:

Brothers of the Dark Vision:	Anywhere	(BMPG)

Dwarven Songmasters:	Crystal Peaks	(BMPG) - Dwarves only

Jocular Jongleurs:	Anywhere	(BMPG) - Mainly Gnomes and Halflings

Northern Collegium Musicium:	The North	(BMPG) - Originally a branch of the Thonian Collegium Musicium (See below)

Northern Heralds:	The North	(BMPG) - Spreads information for the Northern Alliance

Order of the Sun and Harp:	Anywhere	(BMPG) - Followers of the God Baldin

Royal Society of the Lyre and Lute:	Redwood	(BMPG) - Elves only

Silver Circle, Blue Circle:	Blackmoor University	(BMPG) - Overseeen by The Fetch

Society for the Preservation of the Northern Record:	Blackmoor University	(BMPG)

The Rhymers:	Blackmoor/Thonia	(GH) - Almost extinct. Formed by Valemen?

Thonian Collegium Musicium:	Thonia	(BMPG) - Based in Mohacs

Voice of the People	Plains of Hak	(BMPG) - Peshwah only

Could Guidarezzo be the one who established the Northern Collegium Muscium? Could it even be the name assumed by Alwyn Morland (DA1, DAB)? Morland is a woman, though Immortals have been known to switch genders whenever they feel like it. Or if not Morland herself, could there be a connection between Guidarezzo and Moreland?

Are there other ways we can use this information to expand on the way we see Bards in Blackmoor?

I understand that by the time Zeitgeist Games was publishing Blackmoor, the licenses for Blackmoor and Mystara had been legalistically separated. However, for those of us for whom Mystara and Blackmoor are inseparable at our game tables, I have made the following Mystaran creature substitutions to "The Dungeons of Castle Blackmoor" product when it calls for creatures that are definitely NOT Mystaran.
Instead of duergar, I use Modrigswerg dwarves.
and instead of aboleth, I use kopru.
I think these substitutions keep the spirit of the written dungeon adventure while also staying true to the classic Mystara/Blackmoor continuity.
