FFC Magic System vs. D20 Blackmoor Magic - Havard - 11-23-2011

Has anyone done any comparisons between the magic system of the FFC and the different magic rules in D20 Dave Arneson's Blackmoor. Are there any similarities at all?

Also, the appearance of magical crystals/gemstones used in magic in the D20 system is interesting. I have heard rumours that Fred Funk's group also used something similar. Is this an old "Arnesonian" idea that was incorporated into the D20 Blackmoor setting?

The spellshard idea is from Moorcock, IIRC, so it's probably Arnesonian.

I never put anything on paper, but I've noticead a number of similar stuff - spell effects and so forth. Hard to remember off the top of me knoggin.

While the "spell focus" was Dustins idea, I think he was probably inspired by Dave's stories. There is a kind of gem of spell storing in Dave's D&D draft, for ex.

Sounds like a classic fantasy trope. Do you have anything more specific? My google-fu is too weak Sad

Very interesting. Might be worth investigating further.

This is what I am thinking too. The Gem of Spell Storing is an interesting thing here. Dave's D&D draft?

Yeah, it's listed as a level 5 "glittering Eye" spell. Basically it requres a gem to hold up to a half dozen (IIRC) other spell that triger automatically if the MU is attacked, etc.

Another example I just recalled is that in Daves Ms. he has Horn of Panic instead of OD&D's drums of panic - which in principle is an awful lot like the d20 BM Horn of Despair.

Even though a great deal of the BM d20 line of products was obviously the brainchild of Dustin and other writers, I think he was being accurate when he said Daves "fingerprints" were all over the stuff.

I think it's from "Corum", but the Shannara series by Terry Brooks features almost exactly the same thing, in the "elfstones".
