[Blog] Beholders of Blackmoor - Havard - 05-06-2011 Crossposted from: http://blackmoormystara.blogspot.com/20 ... kmoor.html Originally invented by Terry Kuntz, the Beholders first appeared in Supplement I: Greyhawk. I was never really a big fan of the Beholders to be honest, with their strange appearance and seemingly random powers. I tend to like monsters that fit into a certain theme, or are associate with some kind of mythology. I liked the idea of grouping many of the more bizarre creatures together as Aberrations, creatures from a distant plane of weirdness. I linked this to the Dimension of Nightmare from Frank Mentzer's BECMI cosmology. My main reason for bringing up Beholders now is that they just appeared in Rafael's Blackmoor PbP Game, the Last Fantasy Campaign. Here they are described as Sentinels of the Egg of Coot. That is just brilliant! Not only does the round shape of the Beholders fit well with the Egg, whatever it is, but the Nightmare/Far Realm connection, also fits well with my Cthulhuesque interpretation of the Egg itself. -Havard Re: [Blog] Beholders of Blackmoor - DungeonDevil - 05-15-2011 Beholders working for the Egg = brill. 8) I would describe them to be, not spheres, but ovoid. Also I would delete their eyestalks--just have egg-shaped, hovering orbs with eyes all over the surface, perhaps like Beljoxa's Eye from S7 of Buffy: http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/ ... fullsize=1 http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/ ... fullsize=1 http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/ ... fullsize=1 http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/ ... fullsize=1 Re: [Blog] Beholders of Blackmoor - Havard - 05-15-2011 DungeonDevil Wrote:Beholders working for the Egg = brill. 8) I love it! -Havard Re: [Blog] Beholders of Blackmoor - DungeonDevil - 05-17-2011 DungeonDevil Wrote:Beholders working for the Egg = brill. 8) EDIT: I can see a number of these as sentinels encircling the Egg of Coot's domain: anyone who wishes to enter must answer questions which are then telepathically transmitted somehow to the Egg's chamber deep in the earth. If any questions are not fully answered, several balrogs are teleported to that location to deal with unwanted intruders. hock: However, as they are imprisoned in those spherical cages, the implication would be that they have been enslaved to serve the Egg (like other races) and, if the party would be able to free one, then it may thereupon aid them. Could be a cool addition to the party! Re: [Blog] Beholders of Blackmoor - Rafael - 05-17-2011 Thank you, thank you. Autographs backstage, but only if you bring coffee. I prefer black, with no milk. |
