[WL] Blackmoor and the Wilderlands - Havard - 05-04-2011

The only previous discussion on this topic that I have been able to find in the Wood of the Revenant is this one:

viewtopic.php?f=26&t=724

The connection between the Wilderlands and Blackmoor originated at the time when JG published the First Fantasy Game. I believe this is when the valley surrounding the City of the Gods became named the Valley of the Ancients, thus linking it to the region of the same name in the Wilderlands.

Thematically the two settings also fit quite well. Both have a sword and sorcery theme, hints at sci fi elements, rumours of visitors from other planets etc.

The most serious effort to incorporate the two, I believe is our home campaign, the Last Fantasy Campaign, whose campaign documentation integrates the timelines of the two settings. At least one character, Tolleen, from the campaign is also from the Wilderlands region.

Did I miss anything?

You could link some of the human races of the Wilderlands to those of Blackmoor? For instance, the Skandaharians become the Skandiks. Not sure about the Peshwah or Valemen?

Still a shame that the JG Blackmoor map and the JG Wilderlands maps are different scales from one another. It's not as much fun laying them out on a table when they don't quite fit together right. :?

Didnt Dave L do something about that, Fin?

Yes, he did. Smile

I redid the Blackmoor map at a 5 mile/hex scale, the official scale of the WL.
Basically I took Dave Arneson's original scale of 10 miles, so the Blackmoor map is 4 times the size of a WL map.

The DA modules used 24 miles (WRONG!) and 12 miles - but the maps were all exactly the same size as the original. Doh!

It's in the Blackmoor folder on my flickr site.

Someone else (Rob Conley maybe?) had posted some sort of a map that tried to blend the two together but I don't recall that the hexes really lined up well.

I remember that DaveL had posted some colorized maps, but I guess I'd forgotten that he had both Blackmoor and Wilderlands maps in the same scale.

I'll have to go look again in his flickr section.

The Peshwah of BM fit nicely with the Tharbrians of the WL, even though the Tharbrians are even more savage than the Peshwah.

St. Stephen and the green-tinged skin aliens from the Beagle can easily be explained (in game, to the PCs) as probably being humans from the Wilderlands to the South, where humans are known to come all different skin colors (green, blue, red, etc - according to the d20 Player's Guide to the Wilderlands).

Aren't Tharbrians more similar to the Valemen? I always saw the Peshwah closer to the Karakhans. I do like this idea of tracing racial connections between the two settings though. You know the Wilderlands better than me Sheridan, I think, so I will trust your judgement Smile

That is true. I don't expect there to be alot of Viridians etc from the Wilderlands making their way up north, but especially while travelling in southern lands, Aliens will be able to move around unnoticed...

Well, the connection between Viridians and Frogmen should be obvious.

Might be that we even see something similar in the game.

Actually yes, or perhaps even more the Sar Aigu and the Viridians... Puts a rather sinister spin on the Viridians, but that might not be such a bad thing?
