Gertrude the Dragon - DungeonDevil - 01-25-2011

FFC, p. 19 Wrote:Also the East Gate became known as Gerri's Gate (named after Gertrude the Dragon who was killed there by the Baddies).

Are there any anecdotes to elucidate this shadowy figure from Blackmoor's past?

And more intriguingly, was Gertrude the Dragon based upon Gertie the Dinosaur?

Wow!

Greg, do you know anything about this?

In addition to Gertie, there is also Sophie, the Wizard of the Wood's Dragon.

There's definetly stories of gertie. Chirine posted one on this board about becomeing friends with her. There was the renaming of the gate in Blackmoor after whe was killed. couple others, and there's Dave's drawing of her in the FFC. (or was that sophie?)

I will try to collect these later for an article. Sophie is illustrated in Garbage Pits. there are a couple of dragon drawings in the FFC, but I'm not sure if any were named?

What?!?

If Gertie's been done in by somebody, I'm gonna have to do something about it. Seriously.

Re: Gertrude the Dragon - DungeonDevil - 01-26-2011

I see a draconic looking silhouette in the illo on page 61 of the FFC. Is that Gertrude?

And again I see another dragon on page 63, but the caption says "Tomb of the Grey Dragon". More questions, more mysteries....
Who would venerate a dragon by building a tomb for it? Such a large edifice would have been the result of many man-hours of labour for its construction, implying an organised work-force over a presumably long period of time (unless there was some magical presto-change-o going on). What did it do to win such admiration? What kind of life did it lead and how did it interact with the player-characters (if at all)? Or, perhaps it was bad and was sealed up in the tomb to keep it from being a menace! Confusedhock: Do not disturb!

I'm thinking - like several other characters - Dave resurected her. I got the idea from this line in the FFC under "The Town of Blackmoor map"; "Also the East Gate became: known as Gerri's Gate (named after Gertrude the Dragon who was killed there by the Baddies)."

To make things even more complicated,
the 3E sourcebook introduced a Dragon God, Tsartha, whose alter egos include Gertrude and "The Gray Dragon". Smile

Re: Gertrude the Dragon - gsvenson - 01-27-2011

Dave had a beautiful model of Gertrude made out of grey clay. She was often sleeping on a rock in Blackmoor bay which we called Dragon Rock (if I remember correctly).
