[BECMI] Creature Catalogue Race Classes for Blackmoor? - Havard - 04-09-2013

In this thread at The Piazza, agathokles has compiled all the classes for BECMI. Which race classes from the Creature Catalogue series would you consider appropriate for a Blackmoor campaign?

Sidhe, maybe, in Thorn's Blackmoor. Tongue Also, harpies.

Merfolk, and sea elves, I think, would not be out of place. Were-creatures would be something relatively "new" to Thorn's Blackmoor, the first generation more than likely being the result of genetic manipulation of the Egg of Coot.

I could see the Tall Tale of the Wee Folk fitting in easily if implemented right, though not sure of Woodrake would fit well. Centaurs might be found in the wild lands of the Vales and Sidhe among the elves or men of Blackmoor. The Sea People is a nice thing for a aquatic campaign but other then that not sure how it would fit. Top Ballista is a strange thing, Harpies might be allowable in more monstrous games but as for the gnomes maybe they could be a 'iffy' thing. They have fantasy engineering and as nice as that may be where will you draw the line? Also the Night Howlers would be iffy, might be known in the wilder regions where barbaric tribes still hail to primal totems and practice primitive magics.

Yeah, those exist in my campaign as well. I am also thinking a connection between Sidhe and the Fey Lord class from the D20 Blackmoor line. Also, I can't quite remember how 4E Blackmoor handled Eladrin, but I would expect Sidhe to be the BECMI equivalent of Eladrin.

I seem to recall a reference to Sirens in the FFC. Aren't Harpies and Sirens terms sometimes used interchangably? OTOH, I have yet to allow Harpies as PCs.

That is an interesting idea! I do recall there being Werewolves in the Blackmoor Dungeon.

Agreed. I think PC1 states that Woodrakes in their current form first appeared after the destruction of Blackmoor. Makes me wonder what they were like before that time? Centaurs also fit on the Steppes of Hak.

You have just inspired me to make a thread about Blackmoor Underwater Campaigns! As to PC3 races in non-Aquatic campaigns, Aquatic elves is the most useful race as they can operate above water with no problems.

Gnomes, for sure. IIRC They have to reach quite high levels before their fantasy physics stuff can really do that much. Also, if its weird, it has a place in Blackmoor right? Smile

I do like the idea of more barbaric cultures, maybe even the Peshwa, looking at Lycantropes in a different way than more civilized folks. Interesting!

I suppose one might use the two terms interchangeably. Sirens, if I remember rightly, have more of a tie to the sea, their singing luring sailors and such to their doom among rocks and shoals. Harpies, on the other hand, are associated with air, originally having been depicted as 'beautiful women with wings.' They were later confused with sirens, probably due to the whole "beautiful women" thing they had going -- wings notwithstanding. The whole "ugly" thing came a bit later, as well.

I would never allow them as a playable class, especially when their origins come to light in Act 2 of the Throne of Stars Campaign.......
