[Movie] Solomon Kane - Ironhead - 08-25-2012

I don't know how I missed hearing about this before now, but I was flipping through the Watch It Before It's In Theaters movies available from Comcast tonight and stumbled across the trailer for Solomon Kane. It looks pretty good and stars James Purefoy, which may be the best casting decision of any adaptation of Robert E. Howard's work, ever. I'm trying to convince the wife that she'll enjoy it as much as I will ( yeah, yeah, I know - we've all been THERE before Big Grin ).

Has anyone else seen it or even the trailer yet? If so, what did you think?

Re: [Movie] Solomon Kane - Rafael - 08-26-2012

This one was released in Europe some time ago already.

A good TV production that suffers from its small budget, but is watchable. Of course, not much from the original stories remains in the movie, but I was entertained.

Re: [Movie] Solomon Kane - Havard - 08-26-2012

I have to second Noir Faineant on this one. Its been a while since I watched it, but as I remember it was watchable, but didnt blow me away.

I think the fact that it was a kind of origins tale took away some of sense the mystery about the Kane character that I would have preferred. If they were going to reveal his origins, I would have preferred it if they did so as flashback scenes instead, gradually revealing why he became the badass puritan he is rather than have him start out as pretty much a regular guy at the beginning.

BTW, if you dont have it, the Savage World of Solomon Kane RPG is a pure piece of RPG art in itself.

I actually went ahead and watched this movie again.

I have to say it was better than I seemed to remember. The only thing that bothers me is that with only small changes it could have been a truly great film. According to wikipedia, it was intended to be the first in a trilogy. Lets hope that gets picked up somewhere down the road Smile

I think I saw on Dragonsfoot that the SK movie is scheduled to be released in the US later this month. 8)

I still haven't seen it but plan on watching for it....

Re: [Movie] Solomon Kane - Ironhead - 09-18-2012

I never did get the wife to watch this with me, but it did inspire me to go back and read Howard's Solomon Kane stories again and for that I am truly thankful. What a master storyteller the man was - he worked from a simple formula every time, but his results always humble me when I compare my work to his Sad

One thing I like about Solomon Kane is that these stories explore a period that is much less used in fantasy these days. Its good to see someone raise a musket against the demons every once in a while... 8)
