- Rafael - 02-12-2010 AFAIK, it's the map from the 1975 Castles & Crusades Society magazine. (Looking faithfully to Havard for explanation.)

Correct me, if I am wrong, but weren't the rest of the places principally introduced as sources for the different characters' backgrounds? Our adventures were not limited to BM proper. We had raids on/to the Realm of the Egg, Duchy of Ten and one to Greyhawk. We passed through to other planes or dimensions. Voyages to distant, now forgotten, places. Even time travel adventures. The period when we travelled by Tarn/Roc opened things up a bit (I think that was in '72 and lasted about four to six months before we got tired of flying everywhere and they disappeared). - Havard - 02-12-2010 Aldarron Wrote:Who drew that map Rafe? I've never seen a Blackmoor town map on graph paper with numbers and letters on the side. Is it Dave's original? I wonder if we could tie this into a story though. Why they disappeared and so on... IMC I am thinking of linking the Tarns to the Peshwa primarily... Havard - gsvenson - 02-12-2010 Havard Wrote:Is the "one on Greyhawk", the adventure where Gary DM'ed for the group?Svenny was an NPC in Gary's adventure, but yes. I found out about it after the fact from Dave A. Quote:Do you have any specific memories of any of these places? Quote:As documented in that article where Dave talked about setting Svenny up against Nazis...Richard Snider also ended up in a WW2 battle with the Japanese. There was a rusty Japanese tankette outside the Freehold in the old days that was moved to Newgate sometime after Svenny became baron there (no fuel or ammo left, sorry). Why they disappeared and so on...Yes, but the peaks might be a better location for them (in my opinion). I think of the Peshwa as American indians or maybe Mongols/Tartars. With the dragon hills in their vacinity they might be more likely to be found riding dragons than Rocs. - aldarron - 02-12-2010 gsvenson Wrote:Yes, but the peaks might be a better location for them (in my opinion). That would also fit with the "Gorean" character of the Ducy of the Peaks as Havard wrote it up on his 'blog. I think Tarns are one of the great things about early Blackmoor in that they help to give it that otherwordly, this isn't medieval Europe, kind of feel. - Havard - 02-14-2010 gsvenson Wrote:Havard Wrote:Is the "one on Greyhawk", the adventure where Gary DM'ed for the group?Svenny was an NPC in Gary's adventure, but yes. Do you know anything about what kind of characters Dave would play, if he didnt DM exclusively? Quote:Sadly, while I remember them happening, no real details after 35-39 years. It is so interesting to hear about these experiments you were doing with the game back then. These days I would probably link such devices to the Valley of the Ancients or perhaps other similar sites. Tarns/Rocs: Quote:Yes, but the peaks might be a better location for them (in my opinion). As Aldarron is saying that fits well with the general idea of the Peaks as well. Perhaps the loss of the Tarns to Blackmoorians could be linked to the Afridhi blocking trade with the Peaks? ![]() Havard - aldarron - 04-07-2010 So recently my mind has been turning back to this discussion and mapping of original blackmoor environs and that’s probably why, when I happened to be reading Holmes rules that this quote from the introduction from Gary Gygax jumped out at me. “From the map of the "land" of the "Great Kingdom" and environs — the territory of C & C Society — Dave located a nice bog wherein to nest the weird enclave of "Blackmoor," a spot between the "Giant Kingdom" and the fearsome "Egg of Coot." Giant Kingdom!? Never noticed that before! The intro is supposed to be the original one from 1974 so I checked Men and Magic and it is indeed the same text except “Giant Kingdom†- gsvenson - 04-07-2010 For what it's worth, my recollection is that we always called it "the Great Kingdom". I suppose that Dave could have changed the name later, after I moved away from the area. In the summer of 1972 I went away for seven weeks and remember that Svenny stayed busy buying magic items in Blackmoor and transporting them to the Great Kingdom for resale. This was to explain why Svenny was not with his usual companions during that time. As I recall, Svenny lost his shirt in the enterprise... - sheridan - 04-08-2010 Havard Wrote:Do you know anything about what kind of characters Dave would play, if he didnt DM exclusively? I know the question was directed to Greg, but just before Dave launched Zeitgeist Games he and I were corresponding for a bit via email and I remember he once said his favorite classes were paladins and assassins. The contrast there always seemed funny to me, so that stayed in the back of my mind all this time. Just figured I'd share that little tidbit. ![]() -Scott |
