I'd like to a see bigger review by him, though!
But on the game, yeah, he's right, it's a goddamn shame.
C7 is pretty much a good company, with Victoriana being a de-facto Ravenloft successor, so my hopes were pretty high.
But what motivated them to publish this lame duck of an RPG, I do not know...
Frankly, for me, I have this problem:
All RPGs I truly like are from the 80s or 90s, or clones and reeditions (Dragon Warriors, for example).
To start a new group with people that all have access to the same bunch of books is getting increasingly difficult,
the last time that happened being my New World of Darkness campaign.
But now, apart from some really obscure stuff, there is no generic RPG system that I can tell my players to buy.
TOR would have been one such thing - simple system, relatively well-known setting, etc.
And instead, we get what I would classify as an absolute can.
The level of my bumming, it is considerable.
Pathfinder doesn't really catch my interest (something that led to really awkward moments between me an Mr Mona at Ropecon, btw), the WOD games are all naaah, and the new Warhammer, both FRP and 40k requires you pretty much to play in the canonical setting.
But a rather generic fantasy RPG, usable for conventional or homebrew settings, there's simply none.

I too really like the work they have done with Victoriana. Didnt really see the Ravenloft connection untill you mentioned it now though 8)

There are some good games coming out these days too. Savage Worlds and ASoIFRP (A Song of Ice & Fire) are two games of more recent date that I really enjoy.

For face-to-face type games I tend to just buy two copies of the rulebook so the players can borrow one from me. Thats trickier with online games of course.

Pathfinder is pretty much 3E with some add-ons. What is cool about it, and what I told Eric is their style and type of products.

I am ofcourse a "published setting" type of guy, but we have had great success usng NWOD for homebrew games. I could also see using WHFRP 2nd edition for homebrew. From what I have seen of 3rd ed WH, I am staying away from that one. 40K could be cool to play, especially Rogue Trader.

- Savage Worlds
- D6 Fantasy (Check out the MiniSix variant if you havent already done so).
- BRP/RuneQuest (Any edition, I am waiting for the version Jeff Richard & Co are working on)
- All Flesh Must Be Eaten (with the Dungeons & Zombies supplement by the very cool Jason Vey).
- WHFRP 2nd Edition
- A Song of Ice & Fire

I't basically Ravenloft without the license. The reason I don't really bother, is, of course, I prefer to play the real stuff.
You might not know this about me, but Ravenloft is actually what I do most as a DM IRL.

Sure. It's less about what games are "good", and what games "I like", I guess. For my part, the next local game that I run will be DW,
and afterwards most likely something set in robert Asprin's Thieves World. ...So, it's not like I don't have plans, or lack inspirations, but all to the contrary.

Hehehe, how kind. In our groups here, we all buy one, usually. When I got rid of parts of my collection in 2007, I gave rule books for 15 different systems away,
including a 1e Earthdawn book, which was some of the dumbest things I have ever done.

Again, I know it, but I don't like it that much, lamentably. I don't like the setting, and I think the APs are nice, but way too long.
Was kind of funny at Ropecon, because Mr Mona apparently expected a lot of enthusiasm and detail knowledge from me, and I like,
not really interested in other than Greyhawk tales, much to his lament.

All Warhammer games are extraordinary - even 3e. The problem is just, to create an "authentic" feeling for players that might know the setting from other sources,
that takes just too much time. I even read a few novels - and I don't like the fantasy genre per se, as you might know - but then eventually gave up.
I am a very enthusiastic WH FRP player, though, both in 40k and Old World.
...Actually, one that I dug out recently was the 3e Ghostwalk campaign. I think I'll give that a closer look tonight...

But Arcana is a 19th C Fantasy Europe Setting and from what I understand not really horror. I do see some similarities to Ravenloft Masque of Red Death, but less so with standard RL. My first association to Victoriana was Castle Falkenstein...

Oh, absolutely. You'd be surprised how similar Falkenstein, MotRD or RL supplements really read.
Just so you get an idea, this apparently is the first bigger supplement for Victoriana's 2e:

Of course, the high fantasy elements are way more prevalent in this one than in MotRD and RL, and of course they're not one-to-one copies,
but let's put it this way: If you like one setting, you'll like the other, too, and be able to use a whole lot for crossovers.
