David Ross is a legendary Blackmoor fan who did some impressive research on the pre-3E Blackmoor source material. It can be found here:

Hehe, there are so many Davids involved with Blackmoor. It doesnt help that we have another couple of them posting here does it? Big Grin

Did you ever get around to buying Dragons at Dawn? Smile

Yes I did. I really like it but have only used it to supplement my games rather than run a whole game with it. Maybe one day I will get to run D@D itself.

How about Blackmoor? I know you said you have the FFC. Have you gotten to explore Dave Arneson's world further? Smile

Re: Hello - Julian Grimm - 12-24-2011

I have the perfect window to do so. I am hopefully starting a new campaign and Blackmoor is on my radar as the world. I am looking very seriously at this prospect as I want something I haven't done before. I have been perusing the FFC, Blackmarsh and the D&D Blackmoor modules.

Re: Hello - Julian Grimm - 12-24-2011

As an addendum, we have decided on using S&W: Core with some modifications from D@D. I have also grown more interested in Dave's style as a DM. So, if I were not to use Blackmoor as a whole I would be borrowing ideas from Dave's playstyle and world. Since we are just up to getting characters together I still have room to work even up to the first few adventures.

Since I am relatively new to Blackmoor and Arneson's style any pointers are appreciated.

Sounds like fun! So far I havent heard any stories from games using Blackmarsh. Would be very interested in hearing more about how that develops! Smile

I like that you will be trying to emulate Arneson's style as well as using his setting. Sounds like a pretty interesting experiment. A few things that could help describe Arneson's style:

1) Don't let the rules get in the way of fun
2) If it seems weird, but you and your players like it, it belongs in the campaign.
3) No tolerance for whiners, but be prepared to change things if players voice serious concerns.
4) Dungeons are important, but so is outdoor exploration and warfare.
5) Encourage non-adventuring activities in between adventures ("hobbies")
6) Adventures should include an element of randomness.
7) If you have enough players, let some of them play the monsters.

Other Arneson-knowers, feel free to criticise or add to this list! Smile

Re: Hello - Julian Grimm - 12-28-2011

I had a discussion with a couple of my players last night and we settled on a few things for the campaign.

1) The players want to use my modified C&C for the game. That is fine as I have ported ideas from S&W and D@D into that game as well. They prefer a bit more structure to the rules and I'll go with them on this.

2) They are interested in Blackmoor and think it will be a nice change of pace.

3) I told them about Blackmoor's roots in games like Braunstein and they were definitely interested in how the latter was run. They also figured out that is where my town of 'Greenhill' came from and wanted it in our Blackmoor.

So we have a basic guideline and are getting ready. I am working on a general map of our beginning area and will hopefully be ready soon.

Wow, this sounds really interesting. C&C sounds like a good choice. I like the idea of drawing in elements from S&W and D@D. What sort of things will you be incorporating?
