Re: Jon Peterson's Book and Scans - Rafael - 08-07-2012

The book, judging from the previews alone, seems very, very well done.

And, what I have been babbling about for the last five years, you guys underestimate the significance of "this whole gaming thing".

For literary scientists, it's the great uncharted land, and now that most pioneers of the hobby are old or dead, people are going to come like harpies.

The first good Gygax biography, the first book-length analysis of the books by R. A. Salvatore, the transition from Tolkien and Leiber to the family-friendly 80s-model of fantasy,
etc. that's going to be the 21st century's golden calve of science-based research on fantasy.

Yes, yes, you wouldn't think that I am into Blackmoor because "I love gaming", or something that silly? (Hides Mordred campaign draft.)

So what Blackmoor lore does the book reveal from what we already know based on the previews and forum posts?

Re: Jon Peterson's Book and Scans - zenopus - 08-12-2012

I posted some conjecture on the location of Blackmoor on the C&C map that is in Jon's book (which I received last week and am in the process of reading):

Re: Jon Peterson's Book and Scans - Havard - 08-13-2012

Great post Zenopus! This seems spot on. The Desert of Arneson's world corresponds well with the Dry Steppes. Comparing the C&C map to the Darlene Map, it seems like Blackmoor wasn't moved at all. Rather the continent was expanded westwards?

Checked my amazon. Delivery estimate: September 12. Sad

But YEAH, those scans bring out my inner LOLcat. Big Grin

Ok, guess I have to start this myself. Feel free to add things! Smile

Here are a couple of things:
  • The C&C Map as discussed in this thread.
  • Arneson's dating system using the year 1071 to describe what occurred in 1971, or was it just a typo?
  • Gertie's offspring! The Grey Dragon Gertrude is revealed to have offspring of many colors.

What else have you found? Smile

Mentioned this on my comment on Jon's blog, but also noticed that Jenkins is married to Fants homely sister, not cousin as later reported in the FFC.
(You know, jenkins character really needs fleshed out).

The baron of blackmoor is beholden to inspecter general Snider. So presumably his position is Thonian.

There's also the reported earthquake, which would explain allthe collapsed passages/rubble on the 1st level of blackmoor dungeon.

The date is interesting since it presumably indicates the date of the founding of the Great Kingdom.
