In my latest Blog Articles on the Burrower Wars, I introduced the character Keres (my creation).

However, according to the DAB D20 CS, the man who killed Temrin became the God Thanatos. Thanatos is interesting because he appears as the God of Death in both Blackmoor, the Wilderlands and Mystara.

However, Mystara canon is pretty clear about Thanatos having existed since the dawn of time (not sure about WL canon). OTOH, if Keres killed the God of Time, I guess he could bring himself back to the beginning, even if he was born at a later point?

Sounds like something out of Star Trek! 8)

Actually in your article I got hooked by the sound of Keres' name and guessed a link between Keres and Khoronus.
This is also due to the fact that you state that Keres absorbs the power of the god of time in his body - and Khoronus (aka Chronos) is just another "edition" of the god of time, if you think about it...

Thanatos (maybe not so much at Burrowers war era?) is often very good at "suggesting" evil deeds froom behind the scenes... maybe he was behind the assassination plan: I don't think that a mortal on his own can put together and deliver such a good plan to murder a god... or not?

Hypothesis:
Keres is a soul shaman and, for his bad luck, steps into Thanatos.
Thanatos can't reincarnate to cause chaos, but can take over Keres body.
Keres/Thanatos finds a suitable weapon in the glacier and tricks Temlin (god of time).
Keres/Thanatos absorbs the mystic energy of dying Temlin and uses it to awake the Burrowers and bring chaos and death to the world for several centuries.
The vital energy sent to the Burrowers to wake them up is channeled to the Dimensional Vortex that swallows the immortals (and that keeps the Old Ones away), as the Burrowers have some connection with it (and the Old Ones).
Thanatos wouldn't sacrify his own vital energy to awake the Burrowers, but wanted to use somebody else's energy.
Thanatos is happy, goes back to his planes and leaves behind the useless body of Keres as an old toy.
Keres body still have a sparkle of Temlin mystic energy, but that's not enough to be a god again.
Temlin mystic energy in Keres body is enough to get reincarnated (or time-transported?) in the mortal Khoronus (much later in time) and to send an inspiration to immortal Khoronus (much much later in time) to send a time machine random back in time (that time machine will end up to the mortal Khoronus, making effectively possible that the immortal form of Khoronus sponsored the mortal form of Khoronus).

This is all part of a secret quest of the secretive god of time (Temlin-Khoronus-third reincarnation tbc) to become immortal three times and send his vital energy through the Dimensional Vortex every time (returning to the status of mere mortal) in order to achieve an higher level of power. First and second part of his quest are completed.

Just an hypothesis...

This is some really interesting speculation.

I posted my version of the role Khoronus plays in this story up on my blog, but much of this is still compatible with that...

Uhm... I think in my previous post I might have confused Old Ones, Outer Ones and... I'm confused...
