++++ START OF SESSION ++++
Referee's notes: The party nearly concluded this portion of the campaign. For the record I simply used Kenzerco's K1 module since it was on the way to their destination. I will also add other notes in this missive.
With an extra bit of leadership added to the party has been missing lately, they decided to convince the "house" to let them through by holding up the seed they found under the Druid's bed. Saying in effect "You want this? You want your baby!? You'd better let us in!"
The house sap that had previously covered the door melted away and the party entered the kitchen. Once completely in and mucking about the room, a trap was sprung. A shower of knives and forks rained down on the party after being let go from the ceiling causing major damage. They all survived in spite of themselves and Arnold, having a fondness for kitchenware, collected 50 steak knives and 40 heavy salad forks.
Finding nothing else of value they tried to go through the next door which refused to open even after further threats to the seed. Backing up to the other end of the room (and out of blast radius), the took two of their blasters and fired at the door. The door appeared to take some damage but after the smoke cleared it looked as if it were new.
Next they heard a galloping sound coming towards them so the party shut the door they just came through just in the nick of time to hear a loud "thump".
They aimed and fired again with the same result.
And behind them came another "thump".
Finally they took out their third blaster and fired all at once, achieving success in destroying the next door. (The door behind them ceased thumping. But they never opened it to take a look.)
Referee's note: The door had 95 hit points and it simply received an emergency refresh of all hit points after every blast. 2 blasters do eight 8-sided dice of damage each, thus the law of averages indicated while possible, it was not probable two blasters could do 95 points of damage at once. However three blasters at once could do the trick. Additionally the emergency refresh also cost the house energy points, so it was only a matter of time whether the Party would run out of ammo or would the house run out of energy to heal itself.
Going into the next room they found a pantry. Along one wall was were metal cabinets and against another was an empty chicken pen with a water trough. Opening the metal cabinets they found packages of 70 year old dried meat and a scroll with the spell "Power Word: Freeze". Arnold tasted the meat and found it was the consistency of beef jerky but without the seasoning.
Following the map the party found a trap door behind the water trough and went downward.
Referee note: Actually the 95 hit point door should have been this trap door. But since I already had them waste their effort on such a door I simply lived with the swap. Que sera sera.
At the bottom they found an unkempt storage area littered with miniature mountains of rusted utensils, pottery, crockery, broken furniture, and buckets of patented Folderol. At the other end was an obvious break in the wall left by a fallen stone that revealed a former hidden passage. Before they could leave however they were attacked by four Ghouls who were able to paralyze a couple of characters before they were sent to the nether regions with Elefus' Mace of Disruption. The party simply waited for the paralyzation to wear off the affected party members before moving on.
The way down was a winding passage made entirely of white wood and smooth to the touch. Players who made their skill check versus Botany or Woodland Lore determined it was made entirely of root. They emerged in a 30 foot round chamber filled with the familiar vines and a large pulsating trunk which is apparently the house's "heart".
While pondering on what to do next a female ghostlike apparition showed itself in front of Numrendir and attacked him, while silently two undead creatures lowered themselves down behind Huang and Brother Richard then attacked. Others not so engaged were struck by 1 to 6 vines. The battle went on and on until our location's closing time so I'll just state the highlights:
- The vines got in a few rounds of attacks on the party until blaster fire aimed at the ceiling destroyed them. New vines sprung from the "heart" but not enough to prevent direct attacks on it.
- The "creatures" turned out to be energy draining Wights. Huang lost one level of experience and Brother Richard lost two.
- Kmaregh brought forth the "seed" discovered upstairs and threatened out loud to destroy it. It did not appear to faze their opponents. Therefore on the next round he tossed up high into the air (high enough so the blast radius wouldn't return on them) and on queue one of the other characters (I forget which), having a blaster blew it to smithereens.
- The apparition completely drained Numrendir of his Dexterity score and he collapsed. (Probably due to a total inability to keep his balance.) In any case as soon as that happened, the apparition disappeared.
- The "heart" is still taking damage and the end result is still in doubt although technically the K1 module is nearly completed.
