Notes
Ulrike's folk were driven from their home on the steppes when several dragons decided that that place was ideal to settle a difference of opinion.
Their leader, Jarl Harald Iceveins had done favors for Prince Anslem Trollskinner and through the intercession of the prince they were granted some lands on the surface of the Dwarf King's personal mountain, Tygeforge, a mostly inactive volcano with a few hot water spots.
Although hunters for the most part, the lands given to them were quickly hunted out of game and they began to resort to farming to keep fed.
Grains can be used to make beer, and the Dwarves came to love the beers made by their human vassals. In short order the human colony expanded to the foot hills and canyons below. But 'below' is in a direction away from human and elven lands and relatively few outsiders know how extensive the Northmen on the Mountains are.
Of late, Elven treachery has been seen within the human kingdoms, efforts to darken the reputation of the dwarves and sew distrust with the humans have been traced to several Elven Lords. It is feared the Elves will stir up a war between men and dwarves and probably swoop in to gobble up one or both folks as slaves when the war efforts weaken them enough.
Dwarves who've been sent to investigate this have tended to not return.
King Harald V has decided some of his human vassals might slip through elf patrols and mix in with the humans in their lands and learn the truth of things.
Ulrike is one of those selected for this mission.
She andher team barely crossed the border when mostly human bandits led by two elves and a half elf ambushed them. They'd been forced into a small defensive circle when sleep spells from the 3 elvish blooded dropped them all.
Ulrike awoke, unlike the others in her party who'd been murdered. Gang raped by her captors, her ability to please kept her alive. Towards dawn, the two men assigned the task of killing her took another go at her first. Their last mistake.
She'd worked her hands free of the bonds and with a rock in her fist, delivered a groin punch to the man immediately on top of her that rendered him unconscouis.
She got to the first man's sword, lying with his leather armor a few feet away and gutted the second one, whose death scream was high pitched and 'girlish' enough to be what the other bandits expected.
In the silence afterwards she strangled the man she'd knocked out.
The first man was about her size so she took his armor and shield. The second man's sword wasn't all that well cared for but far better than the first. Taking that man's backpack she fled.
She was amazed to discover they'd never removed her boots and thus never found the coins she kept in them.
Her job, as she sees it is to try and complete her mission. The loss of her team hurts but returning barely a day after leaving would make her look weak and cowardly. Besides those behind the bandits might well lead her to those bandits and well deserved vengeance.
==============================================
This is a little different. Elves are the enemy in her eyes if not the actual campaign. Not Dark Elves, real honest Elves. Are the Elves up to no good? Or is it merely a set of happenstance and coincidences that made a Dwarven king suspicious?
